We know it's wise to keep a first aid kit handy with bandages, wound cleansers, wraps, aspirin and other helpful items for minor wounds, sprains, and aches & pains. I also find Essential Oils to be an essential part of my medicine cabinet as they ease and heal many ails.
AlimentsMinor Burns: First run cold water over the area until the burn cools down. Make a cold compress with ice and 1-3 drops of Lavender oil. (see how to make a cold compress below) Continue healing with an ointment (see how to make an ointment below) and the essential oils of German or Roman Chamomile; Geranium, and/or Lavender Oil. Use about 5 drops of essential oil per ounce of a fixed oil. Use Rosehip seed and/or Vitamin E oil to help the scar fade faster.
Cuts and Scrapes: You can make an ointment with any kind of fixed oil (grape seed, jojoba, rosehip seed) and the essential oils of: Benzoin; Geranium; Lavender and/or Hyssop.Use 6-10 drops of essential oil per ounce of fixed oil You can also soak in the tub with a cup of Epsom salt and up to 20 drops of the same oils recommend in the ointment.
Brusies: Lavender and Hyssop are my favorite oils to heal bruises. The oils of: Clove Bud (use just one drop in mixes as too much spice oil can burn your skin), Fennel, Thyme and Sweet Marjoram are also recommended. I like to soak in a warm tub with 1 cup of Epsom salt and 20 drops of essential oils to make bruise fade fast. You can also make an ointment with an ounce of fixed oil and up to10 drops of essential oils.
Hemorrhoids: Just because a problem is embarrassing doesn't mean we can't talk about treating the itch and inflammation that come with it. Soak in the tub with 1 cup of Epsom salt and 10-20 drops of one or a mix of these essential oils: Cypress, Geranium, Juniper Berry, Myrrh, Myrtle, and/or Parsley to ease the discomfort. You can also make your own Hemorroid Pads by soaking a cotton pad or large cotton ball in witch hazel and adding a drop of two of the recommend essential oils. Witch Hazel alone is also a fine, simple remedy for hemorrhoid inflammation.
Sprains: This is the most serious of the minor injuries we are covering. If you have a bad sprain or think you have a broken bone, go the the Emergency Room. If your sprain is minor, immediately hold a cold compress on it or soak the area in ice cold water (add 1/2 cup of Epsom Salt per Gallon of water). Use the Essential oils: German or Roman Chamomile; Clove Bud (again, use just one drop Clove oil in a blend), Eucalyptus; Ginger; Lavandin; Lavender; Marjoram; Black Pepper (just use one drop of this spice oil); Rosemary, Thyme and/or Vetiver on your compress (1-3 drops) or in the tub (no more than 3 drops of essential oils per Gallon of water used). Wrap your sprain in an ace bandage afterwards.
Headaches: A quick sniff of Peppermint oil will quickly clear your head. The essential oils of: Basil, Eucalyptus, Grapefruit, Lavandin, Lavender, , Spearmint, Rosemary, Thyme, Pine Needle, Lemon and Lime may also help. You may diffuse them in the air (see below to learn how), sniff from the bottle or from a piece of cloth, or make a mist to quickly clear your head (see below to learn how to make a mist). If you have a migrain, use a cold compress with 1-3 drops of these oils.
Stuffed Sinuses: Just like with Headaches you can ease congested sinuses by diffusing, sniffing or making a mist. Also many of the same oils are used particularly, Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Thyme, Rosemary, and Pine Needle.
Cold/Flu: Many essential oils also can help protect you from getting colds or flu and ease symptom when you already are sick. These are: Anise, Balsam Peru, Basil, Bay Laurel, Bergamot, Cinnamon leaf, Clove bud, Eucalyptus, Frankincense, Ginger, Grapefruit, Peppermint, Spearmint, Myrtle, Orange, Pine Needle, Rosemary, and Teatree. Diffuse or Mist these oils. Also sniff them deeply from a piece of cloth to decongest your respiratory tract. Also oils like Eucalyptus and Teatree can help kill air borne germs when diffused or used in a mister.
Methods of Healing
How to Diffuse: Get a tea light diffuser. Fill the top with hot water. Add 3-10 drops of essential oils. Light the candle so the water will stay hot. The oils will vaporize in the air.
How to Make a Cold Compress: Double a Plastic Bag and fill it with Ice and a little cold water and tie shut. Soak a cloth in cold water and wring it out. Wrap the cloth around your bag of ice. Drop 1-3 drops of essential oils on the cloth. Place over the affected area.
How to make a mister: Use 10 drops of essential oil per each 1 ounce of water in a mister bottle.
How to make an ointment: Use a fixed oils like, grape seed, jojoba, sweet almond, rose hip seed or another natural fixed oil you enjoy. Add 5-10 drops of essential oil per each ounce of fixed oil. (use the lesser amount if you have an open wound and/or sensitive skin.
